LYNX Blue Line

CES provided comprehensive surveying services to support the original construction and extension of Charlotte’s LYNX Blue Line light rail system.

01 Project Scope:

The project included layout for nearly 20 miles of corridor with precise control and construction staking for platform extension stations, overhead catenary systems, traction power substations, drainage structures, duct banks, and driveways. CES crews also completed final layout and as-built surveys for over 104,000 linear feet of track, ensuring compliance with stringent alignment tolerances. Survey control was tied to existing city benchmarks, and work extended to both North and South Yard facilities to support operations and maintenance facilities.

02 The Challenge:

Maintaining survey accuracy within 0.02 feet over a 20-mile alignment presented a significant technical challenge, especially across varying elevations, tight urban corridors, and active construction zones. CES also had to coordinate with multiple stakeholders, including CATS, City of Charlotte departments, general contractors, and specialty teams. Roadway crossings required meticulous planning to avoid traffic disruptions, and CES needed to respond swiftly to design revisions and evolving site conditions throughout the multi-year effort.

03 The Result:

By implementing daily quality control measures and maintaining open lines of communication across stakeholders, CES ensured seamless field operations. The team delivered high-accuracy survey data, helped prevent costly field conflicts, and provided as-built documentation that accurately reflected the final installed systems. Their contributions supported the successful delivery of a vital transportation corridor serving over 28,000 daily riders and helping to spur billions in local development.
